New Direction: Vintage Sci-Fi Inspired
FKA Twigs, both as a musical artist and as an artist overall, is known for her extremely artful and conceptual visuals and music. For her rebrand, I wanted to imagine that her next album would be more upbeat and pop-inspired, warranting a more colorful and saturated look. Her music often incorporates an overarching character or narrative like her last project, Mary Magdalene; thus, for her new direction I wanted to play off of a sci-fi alien motif that she’s mentioned in her previous songs. Moreover, I included more hand-drawn artwork since a lot of her past album art has been digitally generated or photography.
The idea of aliens is meant to be more playful and lighthearted than her previous themes which opened the door to me designing with a more stylized approach. My digital illustration of Twigs was inspired by vintage science fiction novel covers where characters were traditionally illustrated by hand. I used a saturated bright reddish pink and neon green and added the blob shapes to add a more contemporary feel while keeping it in line with that mysterious/foreign space aesthetic. The typefaces I used also have a similar retro look to tie-in the vintage-inspired concept throughout. For the social media screen and billboard, I wanted to keep Twigs’ portrait out of the focus since I feel that its effect is greatest when used sparingly. In this case, the blobs also function as a supporting design element so the artwork that doesn’t include her face is still consistent.
